The Jaguar XF (X250, X260) can display "Smart Key Not Recognised" after any battery disconnection. This security feature is frustrating but fixable.
Why This Happens
The XF's security module tracks key usage patterns. When the battery is disconnected:
- Security system enters a protective state
- Key-to-vehicle authentication resets
- May require re-learning procedure
Self-Fix: Key Re-Learning
Try this sequence within 30 seconds of reconnecting the battery:
- Sit in driver's seat with all keys present
- Close all doors
- Press START button without foot on brake (accessories on)
- Wait 10 seconds
- Press START again to turn off
- Remove key from vehicle and exit
- Lock and unlock with key fob
- Re-enter and try normal start
If Self-Fix Doesn't Work
You'll need professional equipment to:
- Read key status from RFA module
- Re-synchronise key credentials
- Clear security lockout flags
- Potentially re-program keys to vehicle
