Land Rover Discovery 4 Won't Start? Check Your Earth Strap First

by Range Rover Land Rover Jaguar Spare Lost Key Replacement

If your Land Rover Discovery 4 (L319) shows symptoms of low power - clicking starter, flickering lights, intermittent electrical faults - the culprit is often a corroded earth strap.

Symptoms of Earth Strap Failure

  • Clicking when trying to start (sounds like flat battery)
  • Jump starting works but problem returns
  • New battery doesn't fix the issue
  • Intermittent electrical glitches
  • Heated seats or other accessories behaving erratically

Where is the Earth Strap?

The primary chassis-to-body earth strap is located:

  1. Behind the front passenger wheel arch
  2. Connects chassis to body shell
  3. Often hidden under plastic trim
  4. Exposed to road salt and water spray

The Fix

Replacing or cleaning the earth strap usually resolves the issue:

  1. Remove wheel arch liner/trim
  2. Locate the braided earth strap
  3. Clean contact surfaces with wire brush
  4. Replace strap if visibly corroded
  5. Apply dielectric grease to connections

Could It Be Something Else?

If earth strap is fine, other causes include:

  • Key programming issues (won't crank at all)
  • KVM module faults
  • Actual battery failure
  • Starter motor problems

For key-related no-start issues, Lock50 / JLR Key Genie can help with key programming and KVM diagnostics. Global coverage available.
