by Range Rover Land Rover Jaguar Spare Lost Key Replacement

Not all JLR keyless entry systems are the same. Understanding whether your vehicle uses PEPS or UWB technology is crucial when ordering replacement keys.

What is PEPS?

PEPS (Passive Entry Passive Start) is the traditional keyless system used on JLR vehicles from approximately 2005-2022. Key characteristics:

  • Uses 125kHz Low Frequency for entry detection
  • 433MHz (EU) or 315MHz (US) for remote locking
  • Can be vulnerable to relay attacks
  • Most common system on current vehicles

What is UWB (CTO)?

UWB (Ultra-Wideband), also known as CTO (Clear To Open), is the newer security technology:

  • Uses precise distance measurement
  • Significantly more resistant to relay attacks
  • Introduced on 2023+ Range Rover (L460)
  • Gradually rolling out to other models
  • Keys are not interchangeable with PEPS

How to Tell Which System You Have

ModelYearSystem
Range Rover (L322)2002-2012PEPS
Range Rover (L405)2013-2021PEPS
Range Rover (L460)2022+UWB
Range Rover Sport (L320)2005-2013PEPS

Why It Matters

Ordering the wrong key type means it won't work with your vehicle. UWB keys cannot be programmed to PEPS vehicles and vice versa.
