Not all JLR keyless entry systems are the same. Understanding whether your vehicle uses PEPS or UWB technology is crucial when ordering replacement keys.
PEPS (Passive Entry Passive Start) is the traditional keyless system used on JLR vehicles from approximately 2005-2022. Key characteristics:
UWB (Ultra-Wideband), also known as CTO (Clear To Open), is the newer security technology:
| Model | Year | System |
|---|---|---|
| Range Rover (L322) | 2002-2012 | PEPS |
| Range Rover (L405) | 2013-2021 | PEPS |
| Range Rover (L460) | 2022+ | UWB |
| Range Rover Sport (L320) | 2005-2013 | PEPS |
| Range Rover Sport (L494) | 2014-2022 | PEPS |
| Range Rover Sport (L461) | 2023+ | UWB |
| Defender 90/110 | 2020-2023 | PEPS |
| Defender 90/110 | 2024+ | UWB |
Ordering the wrong key type means it won't work with your vehicle. UWB keys cannot be programmed to PEPS vehicles and vice versa.
