The Range Rover Evoque (L538, L551) "Key Not Detected" message is one of the most common complaints. Here's what causes it and how to fix it.

Cause 1: Key Fob Battery

The simplest cause - and easiest fix. Evoque key fobs use a CR2032 battery that typically lasts 2-3 years.

Signs: Reduced key range, intermittent detection

Fix: Replace CR2032 battery (see our battery replacement guide)

Cause 2: Vehicle Battery Low

Low vehicle battery affects the PEPS antenna sensitivity.

Signs: Slow engine crank, other electrical issues

Fix: Charge or replace vehicle battery

Cause 3: KVM Module Fault

The Keyless Vehicle Module can develop faults, especially on higher-mileage vehicles.

Signs: Key detection fails consistently, multiple keys affected

Fix: KVM diagnosis and potentially replacement/programming

Cause 4: PEPS Antenna Damage

The antennas in door handles and around the cabin can be damaged by water ingress.

Signs: Detection fails in specific locations only

Fix: Antenna replacement

Cause 5: Key Synchronisation Lost

After battery disconnection or certain faults, keys can lose sync.

Signs: Worked before battery/repair work

Fix: Key re-synchronisation with diagnostic tool

Emergency Start Procedure

If your key isn't detected but you need to start:

  1. Hold the key fob against the steering column under the start button
  2. Press the start button while holding key there
  3. Vehicle should start with key in this position

For persistent issues, contact Lock50 / JLR Key Genie for diagnosis and repair. Global coverage available.
